At The Adelson School, DECA operates under a co-curricular model, meaning our chapter is directly integrated into the academic experience rather than functioning solely as an after-school club.
Students apply what they learn in their Business, Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and Economics courses directly to DECA competitions, projects, and leadership experiences. Classroom instruction aligns with competitive event standards, industry expectations, and real-world business applications. In turn, DECA provides students with opportunities to demonstrate mastery through written projects, role-plays, presentations, School-Based Enterprise operations, and leadership conferences.
This model ensures that DECA is not an "extra" but an extension of the classroom, reinforcing academic rigor, professional skills, and career readiness through authentic, hands-on experiences.

The Role Play Event
Business Principles Honors - Mr Mendelsohn
A DECA role play is the most common competitive event, where students are given a realistic business scenario and a specific problem or challenge to solve within a limited amount of time. After reviewing the situation and preparing their response, students present their ideas and solutions to a judge who acts as a business professional. The goal is to demonstrate skills like critical thinking, communication, creativity, and business knowledge while addressing the problem professionally, just as one would in a real-world workplace setting. Role play events are broken into two components below.
Several days before the competition, students take a timed 100-question exam. This assesses knowledge from business, marketing, management, or finance.
Students are given a problem/scenario and are given a short amount of time to problem solve before presenting these ideas to a professional judge.
First year DECA students are encouraged to participate in Principle events, a slightly easier, more beginner event which is used as a stepping stone to learn problem solving and critical thinking. Beyond the first year, students are able to compete in Series events, which offer a more challenging and demanding problem and require a more advanced and robust solution.
The Adelson School offers Principles of Business, which teaches students skills such as problem solving, creative solutions, confidence, and public speaking- all of which are critical to a successful role play. Co Advisor Mr Mendelsohn is the instructor of record for this course.

A DECA Prepared Event (formally known as Written Event), is a competition where students develop and present a comprehensive business plan, marketing campaign, or research project that they create in advance. These events allow students to apply what they’ve learned in class to real-world business scenarios, such as launching a new product, improving customer experience, or analyzing market trends. Students submit a written report that outlines their research, strategies, and financial plans, and then deliver a professional presentation to a panel of judges at competition. Prepared Events showcase a student’s ability to think strategically, communicate effectively, and demonstrate entrepreneurial insight, skills that are essential for success in both college and future careers.
